EDUCATION
This is an issue that is very close to my heart. I am a retired Special Education para, a calling that spoke to my heart. I saw the struggles my students' families went through to get the services their children needed. I saw the struggles my fellow teachers went through every day to provide a comprehensive learning space for their students. The struggle is real. They pour their heart and souls into it, and we keep expecting more and more from them, without adequate compensation and support.
Finding Solutions:
- Fully fund public education
- Raise teacher pay and compensation
- Ensure there is adequate research funding and grants for Texas colleges
- Eliminate the billionaire-funded voucher program
CLIMATE CHANGE
Let's face it, we are paying higher utility bills just to prop up an unreliable power grid. Texas has solar and wind energy ready for use, but big oil billionaires are rewarding politicians for restricting these alternative energy sources. Texas has lots of land for solar and wind use. Let's use that in addition to our existing fossil fuels to lower energy costs.
The science is clear. We can’t maintain using fossil fuels at the pace we are-they will be depleted and we will leave an unlivable planet for our children and grandchildren. Abbott and Andy Hopper care about big oil money and their big oil friends. I care about my neighbors, my family, and all Texans.
Finding solutions:
- Combine solar and wind to create reliable and consistent energy
- Create a stable power grid by using all available energy sources
- Ensure financial incentives for solar and wind companies
HEALTHCARE REFORM
Every Texan should have access to healthcare. It’s a human right. But we shouldn’t have to go into debt to be healthy. We have a daughter who is disabled, and we understand the struggles involved in trying to get the care she needs. We have a 2-year-old granddaughter who has already had two surgeries and will need more as she gets older. Families in our state, our city, our very neighborhoods are having to choose between medicine and food. That is not the way it should be. I will fight to ensure every Texan has affordable healthcare options.
Finding Solutions:
- Protect, expand, and strengthen the ACA
- Extend premium tax credits indefinitely
- Lower prescription drug costs
- Eliminate pre-existing condition refusal of coverage
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION POLICY
Less than 30% of ICE detainees in Texas have a criminal record. How many of those members of our community help put food on Texans' tables, are our neighbors, or sit beside us in the pew on Sunday?
This cruel and shortsighted agenda is the wrong path to a legally secure border. Texas resources and our local criminal justice systems have become the main funnel sending undocumented immigrants into ICE custody, and are being used to fund and aid Trump’s morally bankrupt immigration system.
Finding solutions:
- Modernizing the legal pathway to citizenship
- Enhance stronger border security
- Fund technology applications for security
MILLITARY AND VETERANS
My husband, Jack, is a veteran. We believe our veterans are not being adequately cared for. We owe a debt of gratitude and care to our vets for their courage, sacrifice, and service. That is support that should last a lifetime.
Homelessness and suicide are at an unacceptable level. Rural veterans are finding it impossible to receive services. We need a budget boost to address all these shortcomings in our VA system.
Finding Solutions:
- We MUST reduce the backlog of claims, hire more professionals, and process new claims
faster
- Hire more experienced professionals to help transition from military to civilian life
- End veteran homelessness with REAL solutions
- Reduce/end for-profit healthcare for vets
VOTING RIGHTS
Greg Abbott and his lackeys have moved the goalposts in Texas by implementing a mid-decade redrawing of Texas' congressional districts. And they did it by bullying their legislation through the Texas courts. This gerrymandering is particularly abusive because, with new fine-grained data on the population, we can see how people are likely to vote. Republicans are doing Trump's dirty work to try to keep a majority in the US House. With a US Supreme Court firmly in Trump's court, the Texas Democratic legislature must work to undo this act that violates the voice of Texans.
Our democracy works best when every voice is heard, and every vote counts.
